HE WROTE: Publishing
Since this is supposed to be a relatively realistic record of this year, I thought I'd make this entry while things are going on.
Jennifer just emailed me to say "Don't go anywhere and answer your phone. Meg is going to call." Seems our agent is at this very moment talking to our editor to see whether they want Agnes. Well, we know SMP wants the book, it's a question of how badly they want it. And whether they want just Agnes or another book. Or whatever. There's always a lot of angles to any deal and that's why you need a really good agent. I'm glad to have Meg on my side. A book deal is not a simple thing because there are so many variables.
As I noted earlier, it always turns out in a way you least expect. I've been through this 'waiting on a phone call' which will determine my entire future for the next several years and actually beyond about a dozen time or so over the last 15 years writing for a living. I'm not sure it gets easier, I think I get number. Also you learn to accept the hard part which you do control is writing the book, not worrying about the deal.
BTW: She had to email to tell me to answer my phone because I never answer my phone. In the year and a half of this partnership I think we've talked on the phone maybe a half-dozen times. We're writers, not talkers.
And that email was a half hour ago. So they must be doing a lot of talking in New York.

Good luck.
I really hope they want the book a lot. Obviously they'll be thinking about sales, but as a reader who hasn't seen DLD yet, I'm liking the way this partnership is leading to lots and lots of blog posts which are really fun and interesting to read about. And I'm sure the books will be even better than the blog posts.
Break a leg!! (That's a good thing, BTW)
Color me curious. As we watch you guys go through the ups and downs of nailing Agnes (figuratively speaking), what kind of proposal do the SMP people have? In other words, since it looks like you two are still grappling with key (?) elements of the story, I'm wondering what you gave them to go on to make their decision. Granted, I realize you're both established, multi-pubbed authors with terrific track records...still, this aspiring writer would love to hear what you provided. Or, did I miss this in an earlier post?
There is something weird about men and phones. Why have one if you don't want to answer it? Rhetorical question BTW.
Fingers crossed for Agnes--and you obviously don't watch Hell's Kitchen if you think food people are nice!!
Hey maybe Agnes went on a reality TV show and trashed a contestant--and they lost and wanted to kill her! Man you must hate people giving you ideas!!
You are blowing my dreams of life as an author. I'm waiting for "the call" as my first book is being shopped around. I had hoped that once that was sold I could slide into full literary diva mode. Shaking off writer groupies at conferences, signing books for adoring fans, writing witty blog entries, perhaps parachuting into Denmark with my uzi.... now you tell me there will be more agnst and self doubt? sigh. Tell me there are still groupies....
LOL, Eileen. Look around -- lotsa groupies, it looks like (-:.
And I wonder if this is a plot to get more hits on the site . . . it's been at least three hours since I last checked this blog after the Telephone Cliffhanger, and there's still no news! (-: Oh, what an evil, suspicious mind I have! I guess I'll have to check back later.
Why wouldn't they want Agnes?! You're both doing great with the Blog and you've got avid readers dying for the story! Happy phone talking, Bob (and Jen), and have a good trip to Florida. Wish I could be there.
Hey, are you one of those who don't own a cell phone either? My partner, the Ranger Buddy, swore off cell phone in 2005. He kept his word. It was very irritating. Try it on Jen! ;-)
