HE WROTE: Do Nothing

The sun is out, which is always good. Although, by South Carolina standards it's cold. My 'dashboard' says it's 51 degrees and it's time for me to run on the beach. Yes, a very hard life. Which means the long sleeve shirt.
My dashboard also says the tide is at 1.87 feet which also determines the beach run because if I go right from my backyard and the tide is too high I get stopped after about three hundred yards. Otherwise I can go for a mile. Left, I can usually go a half mile. Yes, a hard life. I've been reading some of the responses to 'stuff' and I realize writers tend to whine too much. We work at home, don't have to commute, and don't really have to answer to bosses. Well, we're our own boss, which can be a very bad thing.
Also, I actually like blowing the leaves off my driveway. I don't have to think. Lots of fun.
My new motto is 'do nothing'. Jenny understands, which is all that counts.
I watched CAPOTE the other day. Very good movie. Writing IN COLD BLOOD destroyed him as a writer. Because he couldn't sort out his feelings. Even in the last scene with the killers-- was it about him or was it about them? Very good acting.
The book tour is coming at us with startling speed. We're doing like an interview a day.
I think I'm ready to send the proposal for CHASING THE GHOST in to Meg. That will be interesting. I like it. Whether anyone else will, is questionable. The writing is the opening two chapters and the resolution chapter (8,500 words) and about 4,000 words of synopsis and character development, FYI. It's very different from anything I've ever done before. It will be a third person limited novel from only one character's point of view, which is also very different than anything I've ever done before. Jenny has definitely corrupted me. For the better.
My head is quite fuzzy.

I like the sound of where you live. Can I come and stay so I can get away from my Stuff? Have you got a horse?

Oh poor sweetie - hope you enjoyed the woozy (no doubt it would have been fun to watch you flapping around in the water) and I'm sure your new book will be brilliant ;-)

Random comments during lunch . . .

I lived in South Carolina for a few years and 51 usually meant the winter coat.

If it makes you feel better there was snow on the ground here this morning and we have all been whining about that.

Go ahead and whine on the blog, you must be doing something right because the blogline subscriber listing keeps growing - up to 53 now (sorry, bit of a /library techno geek here ).

And if babel fish is right, I now know that don't shoot in Russian looks like this: не снимите.

Learn something new every day.

So, I guess this means you haven't found your Russian barber yet, huh?

Are you on the Claritin? I am, and not only am I high as a kite, I can't sleep. but I'm getting a metric assload of writing done.

Bob, Bob, Bob. Writers don't whine ENOUGH. It's hard, listening to the Girls. (Or in your case, the Fellas.) It can't be done with spreadsheets and metrics. Smarts and chutzpah alone aren't enough. It requires the spilling of blood on a regular basis. Whine on, brother.

Yeah, I'm quite partial to the whine, so bring it on. You have a lovely spot for jogging on the beach and with the sun and sudden heat in the desert, I'd trade places in a second. You should both take some time before the whirlwind tour to take care of yourselves. Doing nothing can be very fruitful, in non-writing ways.
Thanks anon, for telling me about the trashbin, it was really bugging me. (grin)

Wait a sec... I'm usually all for supporting the 'do nothing' mantra but aren't you supposed to be the militant go getter to Jennys scattered ways? What would happen if you switched roles? It would be like "Freaky Friday". Mass Hysteria...late release dates.AAARRGG!

I've yet to watch Capote, but In Cold Blood was a masterpiece. But I'm partial to Truman Capote, even if the written version of Breakfast at Tiffany's was very different from the film. Or vice versa.

Anyway, we all hang on your every whining word, so keep on.

My ideal would be to live on the beach. I'm about 20 miles from the gulf, and I try to make it down there 2 or 3 times a month. You've got to enjoy it while you can cause you never know when a hurricane will come along and mess things up for months. In the last 2 seasons, we had 2 major hurricanes, 2 minor, and about 4 tropical storms. Hate to tell you, Bob, but the gulf coast is praying that the east coast gets all the hurricanes this next season.
I watched "Capote" 3 times yesterday. Once as the movie, and twice for the different commentaries. They gave a lot of insights about Truman in the commentary. It was really interesting. I read "In Cold Blood" about 25 years ago, but it has always stuck with me. I hadn't realized that it was the last published book that Truman Capote wrote. I also didn't realize that "To Kill a Mockingbird" came out while Harper Lee was in Kansas with Truman. That was the last published book that Harper Lee wrote. I wonder if there is some connection.
Enjoyed reading the new information about "Don't Look Down". Can't wait to read it! Thanks for doing the blog so we can get our Crusie / Mayer fix for the day.

No, this is not correct. it's actually from an old Beatles record played backwards, and it says "he chnmnt me" and as anyone knows, being chnmnted (especially publicly) is a fate worse than -- well nearly as bad as falling off a kyak while woozy.

Take it one day at a time, guys, and hope for one good laugh a day to get you though.

cheers
Annie G.

If Bob is using a Mac computer w/ Tiger as his operating system, it has a new feature called "Dashboard". When you click on "Dashboard", widgets come up on your screen that show time, weather, etc. To get the tide height, he would have had to create a new widget, because I don't find that in my listing of widgets. If he can do that, then he should be able to work his iPod with no problem.
