HE WROTE: Book Tour, Day One
We haven't made it to the first book store yet and already we're having a heck of a good time. Well, we both haven't even made it to the same city yet.
Apparently Jenny is having problems with trees and George Bush, which might be synonymous.
I have to shortly with the rep from SMP and meet her at LaGuardia. So I'm mulling my greeting-- if she is actually their. I will not greet here with:
A. Why didn't you use a chain saw? That's why you're supposed to be packing a chain saw.
B. Why didn't you put the truck in four wheel drive and go cross-country? That's why you're supposed to be driving a four-wheel drive vehicle.
C. Why didn't you walk to the airport? That's what a real trooper would do.
I will not use any of those opening lines because I am a sensitive man and because I neve envisioned myself dying in LaGuardia airport. Instead I will murmur a sympathetic something or another, and compliment her shoes like Michael Douglas in the American President even if she is wearing clogs.
Then we wil drive to the bookstore where there will probably be no one since the weather is lousy here and cold. I was the only in New York today wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Someone in the airprot actually said to me-- "Hey man, this aint Florida."
The reason I was wearing shorts was because I did the Skirt shot right before going to the Savannah airport.
But that's another story for another day. And yes, I got permission to post the picture here once I get it. And you will be sorely disappointed because like any good SF soldier I improvised.
I just took a shower here and they're working upstairs so while I was showering not only was water coming down on me, so was plaster. This tour is really going to be a blast. I mean it. I take all of this as really good signs.
Bob-- the eternal optimist.

You know they say bad dress rehearsals mean you will have a great opening night. If this is your dress rehearsal, then "The Bob and Jenny Show" should be fantastic. Wish I could see it.
Signed: Stuck in Texas, with great weather, but no Bob and Jenny. (Anyone want to trade?)
I agree with the above ... bad dress rehersal, good show. I'm sure you guys will wow the crowd. Go Bob and Jenny! Hey, is a skirt shot like a rim shot? ba dum bum. On another note:
"I have to shortly with the rep from SMP and meet her at LaGuardia. So I'm mulling my greeting-- if she is actually their. I will not greet here with.."
Okay. I actually figured out what that means. I'm also going to cut you a break because you were kind enough to post for us before you wil head out to meet here at the airprot. {sic}
Bob and Jenny - huge good luck with it all! I bought DLD today at a NY Times reporting store, as ordered. :) See you in Chicago!
Alesia
Smart man - all good comments to avoid. Moot Points for Bob!
Loved the American President. Michael Douglas' daughter in the movie advised him to compliment his date's shoes. Always sound advice. (Would only be a mis-step if shoes were damaged - like a broken heel.)
Can't wait for the improv pic.
Have a great evening and wonderful events tomorrow.
Remember,in the darkness there is death, in the shower there is plaster, and in the bookstores there will be CHERRY BOMBS!
A massive Poor Baby. You two are certainly having a string of bad luck. I'm sure all the local Cherry Bombs will give you lots of sympathy when they see you tonight.
Wow, you really are sucking it up, aren't you? Good man. Carry on.
You really are becoming a 21st century man!
One question--would you recognise clogs?
Stay focused, Bob [sic]. Remember the mission. Do NOT provoke her yet. You have plenty of time for that. Pace yourself.
I can't wait to see this picture. What did you do, Bob? You mean Skirt magazine didn't have something picked out?
I agree that all these things are good signs. Here, here, for eternal optimists!!
I hope you improvised with a towel.
Well, in Australia he'd be a SNAG. Sensitive new age guy. (grin)
Other than that a "snag" is a sausage made from parts of animals you don't want to think about and squeezed into sheeps intestines, or something equally as disgusting. Like a banger in England.
Somehow though, every time I go back home I can't wait to get one of those heart attacks on a bun. (grin)
Happy, happy, first book store. It will be great. Picking up my books tomorrow. Reading tomorrow afternoon, to heck with housework.
Bawb (sp) finally got his meds right. I am not sure what to do with a cheery Bob (sp), but I don't have to do anything.
Good Luck!
Well don't go near a paper shredder or someone may whack you with a stick!
Best of luck on the tour!
Storms, raining plaster, trees blocking the driveway, Bush in the city, missed planes, and Bob is an optimist? Geez, I feel like I've slipped into an alternate universe. But that's ok, because I've already bought (and read TWICE) my new DLD, with the awesome cover, and the cool camo cover, and DH is reading it next.
I know it's going to be rough on you guys, but I have to tell you, it's just making us love you both all the more. As for the place being empty...not a chance in the world. Do you really think lousy, cold weather can stop a Cherry Bomb?
Buck up, campers. There's no crying on book tours.
Huh, a sensitive, eternal optimist who understands the importance of shoes and can identify clogs. Guess that makes you a real renaissance man. We are proud.
Good move to skip the opening comments, especially since you will be her guest soon and may find youself blocked in that newly cleaned guest room by said tree.
Be glad you weren't wearing that skirt in the airport. Imagine the comments then.
People will come in droves. They will love you both. Don't worry, be happy (and have a drink later).
I can't help myself, snag! What a hoot, I love it.
What a day you're both having! I'm going to chime in that I agree on the bad dress rehearsal thing -- you'll knock 'em dead tonight. :)
I'm looking forward to hearing more about your tour, and I can't wait to get my hands on that book!
Proud to be a Cherry Bomb! :g:
Here's one of the guiding philopophies in my life: "No experience is a waste if you get a good story out of it." You and Jenny are getting a lifetime of good stories. Really good stories, not Korean Restaurant stories.
I'm beginning to hate all you cherry bombs who keep gloating about having already read the book. I pre-ordered from Amazon - but chose the free super saver shipping because I'm poor. Estimated delivery - April 14th!
Still stuck in Texas and without DLD.
On the bright side, Anon (aka Stuck), Amazon usually lies. My experience with them says you get the book this week. Unless you also ordered something that isn't out until next week...
I'm on my way to go pick up my copy of DLD at Barnes & Noble. If I manage to recover from the image of Bob [sic] as a SNAG in a SKIRT.
Now there's a t-shirt image just begging to be made.
Bob, you're an optimist. Who knew. (I mean, with all that darkness talk.)
And you posted, even though you had the skirt shot and the plaster and the flights and the greeting Jenny decisions.
How great is that.
You and Jenny are the best. And, you have to be kidding about no one being at the bookstore, because a little bad weather would never keep a single Cherry Bomb away from The Bob and Jenny Show.
Thank you for sharing your life. This is like live theater. I'm hooked for as long as you two continue.
Okay, there's no question but what your tour is starting out with a lot more interesting experiences than it needed to. But I have to agree with the previous postings: No one will care what you're wearing; no one will care if you speak off the cuff; we're all just rooting for you both. My rooting is taking the form of actually buying DLD in hardcover, which is against almost every principle I have, but there was no way I was going to wait another however-many-months until it came out in paperback...
Woo Hoo! Picked up my copy of DLD this evening! Hooked a left before the Metro station and lo and behold it was waiting for me at Borders. Love the cammo cover, Bob! Now my problem is I had intended this to be a vacation read ... 3 weeks from now. I don't think I'm gonna make it.
Back to the Bob and Jenny show. I think we owe you guys major poor babies and Moot points for above and beyond the call of duty. We'll make it up to you at the signings - promise!
Cherry Bombs away!
Hmmm...when the weather is lousy and cold, I head for the bookstore! I think you'll be overwhelmed with support. Picked up DLD this PM (yes, the weather is lousy and cold in CNY too)
And so it begins. Best of luck, stay dry, and smile.
Bob, this is your first romantic adventure book. Trust me. Romance fans don't let a paltry thing like bad weather stop them from supporting favorite authors. If all of the tunnels and bridges into NYC were blocked during a monsoon and a mass transit strike -- Fans would still find a way to get to the signing.
OMG (I usually hate that IM phrase, but it just fits.)
I just got my copy of DLD from my local Waldenbooks. (I'm seriously irritated with my local B&N and their LESS than helpful customer service persons.)
I left work in the rush hour, braved road construction (in Oklahoma, almost every road is under construction), mall area traffic, and spent my lunch money for the next two weeks buying this book.
I haven't spent $30 on a hardback book of my very own since I had my second daughter, and she's almost 6 yrs old. Anyway, I digress, this new book smell is getting to my head!
The covers are amazing. Love the raised print, the colors, and the little moot tracks inside the flaps. I'm afraid to start reading - I don't want to break the spine.
Phew! Thanks for bearing with all my gushing - I just had to let all this out before I exploded! (Cherry bombs side effects?!)
Bob and Jenny - I'm sitting her in the middle of barely there Oklahoma - with nary a Bob & Jenny show stop in sight.
Would you guys consider signing bookplates for CB's like me - that can't get to a conference or signing, but would VERY VERY VERY VERY much love to have a set of signatures in my very own DLD First Edition hardback copy?
If you don't have time or inclination to make a standard DLD bookplate (with maybe room for a J and B and Moot signature), could I make my own and send it to you snail mail along with the usual SASE for return at your leisure. (If I have to make my own, it'll have something that reminds me of the book jacket at the top, with cammo at the bottom, and plent of white space in the middle for signing.)
Please consider the bookplate. But even if you don't have the time or inclination, I'm still going to reverently read and care for my very own DLD.
Shutting up now - that potential CB explosion almost got the better of me.
Best of luck and sincere good wishes for your Big day tomorrow.
Meeting you and Jenny tonight was great. All of the things I wanted to ask flew right out of my head. I wanted to tell you I was really happy you were collaborating with Jenny because I was tired of reading what a woman thought a man might be thinking. I wanted to tell you I picked up Cut Out and really enjoyed it. And Bob you are a funny guy. That whole Greenpeace thing was hilarious.
Hang in there, Bob...you will have lots of grinning cherry bombers waiting for you...books in hand for you and Jennie to sign...
Stil haven't received my copy of DLD..looking forward to reading DLD.
I just have to say I LOVE that there are Moots included as part of the camo on the hard cover. First thing I noticed.
Must return to my regularly scheduled reading now... I'm only 98 pages in.
"Oh sure!" the cheerful woman at the Beaverton Borders said to me yesterday. "We have the book."
"Great!" says I, determined to be equally cheery. "Will you sell it to me?"
"No," she said with a bright smile. "Come back in two days."
Grrr... forget cheerfulness, I'm going to try Angst.
On the bright side, I picked up a copy of Douglas Adams's biography. I always knew he was notorious for missing his deadlines, but apparently one time his publisher got so fed up with it (and him) that he checked the two of them (himself and Adams) into a posh hotel suite and sat with the man until Adams actually wrote the book. (So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish.)
Not that I think Bob should try this if you guys run late with the Agnes deadline. ;)
Amazon.ca shipped me my copy! (And they don't seem to have been fussing over silly little things like release dates, either.) LOVED IT. Read it twice. So far.
Also, just checked, and it's at #94 on the Amazon.ca list (or, if you believe the list itself, #100). *cheers*
Mary,
I got my copy of DLD at Borders in Beaverton on Sunday. They had it on the shelves (not out in front). Their computer thingy knew about it. It's shelved in Literature/Fiction and had some copies face-out.
It's great!
Lynn J
I used to work in a bookstore. Believe it or not, we were always busiest when the weather was bad. After all, what's the best thing to do when it rains? Read a book!
PS- I hope things went well for you last night! Barring further emergencies, I'll see you guys on Thursday!
Geez, Lynn, that's cruel! :(
Last time I smile at a salesperson...
I stayed up reading it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fun, gripping, perfect banter... just too much to praise. Great job you two.
Don't worry, Bob! We think you're great, optimist or pessimist. Just keep writing...
