HE WROTE: Day Two: OFFICIAL BOOK LAUNCH
Yep. It's official. The book should be there. On the shelves. If it aint you can yell and scream at the bookstore.
We just had lunch with Meg, our great agent, who told many wonderful and funny stories. I got to see the Agency brownstone which was really nice and neat, and surprise, full of books, many of them from people we know. We have 33 minutes before we get picked up and do stock signings in the city before heading out to Joisy, I forget which exit, and do our next signing.
Anyway. So. Cherrybombs. It is your official duty to spread the word far and wide this week about our Romantic Adventure, DON'T LOOK DOWN. The emailing went out I think today. I think, because apparently I am not on the emailing list for Crusie/Mayer for some reason. I guess I didn't sign up. Hmm. Oops. Who'd have thunk it. I think the mailing went to like five of six thousand people. Then we've had over nine thousand unique visitors to this blog in March. And we've personally harassed like ten or twelve people today alone on the streets of New York. So we're doing our job. And we're going to bug some more people this afternoon and this evening. Hey you, yeah you buddy. Buy this book. Well, something more subtle than that.
Meg gave us this wonderful inscribed thingy, with an excerpt from DLD that I wish could read but it would require to me put on reading glasses and real men don't wear reading glasses. So. I pretended I could read it. And I gave her and Jenny an SF challenge coin which Meg promptly forgot on the table at lunch and the waiter retrieved so she owes. All around it was a pretty cool lunch.
We met Mollie for coffee in Tribeca where's she's working on the film festival with my buddy from da Bronx Bobby Deniro, and I opened the door for some woman and later Mollie goes, hey that was-- insert famous model's name here-- and I said 'huh?'. My mind is on mission mode. And so should your's, you, over there, Cherrybomb. Spread the word.

Bob, I am doing my part. I bought 3 copies at 3 different sellers. And that is just for today. I have to stop and read it and THEN I can go out and get more.
Glad you are enjoying New York.
Truly, aren't the Cherry Bombs more fun than a camo covered card table?
Funny you should say that, because just this morning (instead of working on a deadline) I emailed the producer of the Walt Bodine Show, a local show on KCUR, Kansas City's NPR station.
The show has authors on quite frequently and I think I mentioned all the points: He Said, She Said, DLD released today, Romantic Adventure and the fact that you would both make wonderful guests!
Hope it works.I also emailed Terry Gross on Friday. You two would be great on Fresh Air. Hope that happens as well.
Glad you're still alive after the green ink incident.
Now I have "Start Spreading the News" playing in my head.
Spread the word. Got it. Doing my part. Bought it and read it. Bought it again for my shelf. Bought it again for my friend. While at the store the third time, got two other people to buy it as well. Then they will go home and read it, and tell two more people, and they will tell two more, and before you know it, people will be asking for a Moot stamp when they see you on a plane.
Don't worry, just hang on for the ride. You're both incrediblem your book is incredible. CBs love you, everyone else will too.
Sir, yes Sir!
I will do my duty and spread the word :)
I'm thinking a road trip is in order...
I bought the book on my lunch break. Jenny is one of the few authors I don't wait to come out in paperback.
So far I'm lovin' it.
Sorry Chef*. Got distracted by the CherryForums, but you've straightened me right out. Heading out to buy my book, now. Right after I spread the good word on Mypace.
(*I went to culinary school. We call our respected leaders Chef, not Sir. Close as I can get, sorry.)
When a man in a skirt with names scribbled on his thighs and a killer pinky asks you to do something- you do it. Never fear my local bookstore clerk is holding onto my copy until after work. She told me today that several others have called to see if it was in- so the word is spreading.
I didn't picture him ordering me around in a skirt, eileen. Thanks for the visual.

I spent enough time calling local bookstores over the last 3 days seeing if DLD was available (and lo and behold, last night one of the local Barnes and Nobles finally caved and sold it to me), that they probably think there's a horde of readers in the East Bay (that's Oakland, Berkeley, Emeryville, etc., CA to those outside the currently rain inundated greater SF area--San Francisco, not Special Forces) just panting for the book. Oh wait. There probably is...
Excessive use of parentheses, penalty: 10 yards.
Sir, yes sir. We've been deployed. Cherry Bombs away!!!
I made big deal about book at Borders yesterday evening - did the TA DA! with the cover and wowed everyone with my background knowledge on the authors (you haven't read him/her? oh you must! He/she is fantastic!) Went on Amazon.com today and submitted a review of DLD - all possible stars, natch. Planning to hype it on my monthly "what are you reading" thread on another board which I will write this weekend. And that's in addition to having hyped it in last month's thread.
And I do believe its working because this morning Amazon had DLD ranked something like 380 in books and now its up to 172 ... and thats from 469 yesterday.
Woo Hoo!
I pre-ordered my copy of DLD from Amazon.co.uk months ago and nothing. "Availability: usually dispatched within 10 to 14 days."
Sorry guys, only J.K.Rowling's book are distributed on time by Amazon.co.uk.
However, it will arrive...eventually...and I'm looking forward to it.
Brighton's right. 10-14 days is the story in the UK so no spoilers in the blog/comments please because we won't have read it by the time you've all finished it. Amazon is the only place in the UK that I could find that stocked it. Still, sounds like you're doing great business in the States, with your five talking points. I am looking forward to ta-da-ing with the cover to all and sundry.
And Bob, just because you open doors and you're in your mission mode, don't think we're forgetting the skirt picture. But for today -- just today, mind -- you get a pass.
Congratulations to you both.
I tried, I really did. I have a Flight For Life Helo landing strip a few yards away from my office. I ran out there to put one of those flying signs on the tail, but they took the "Don't Look Down" seriously and didn't, hence they missed.
I'll think of something else.
I am officially pouting because I have gotten no email. And no call from the B&N I've been harassing for the book, but that might be because they're REALLY sick of talking to me on the phone.
Sad Cherry
:(
Lindsey
No e-mail for me either! That's OK, I'll just read my book!
I am home sick. Really, well, not that sick. I am on my way out the door to the bookstore, but probably I should call first, right?
Don't tell my boss, might have to be sick tomorrow too.
I goofed up and only ordered a few days ago -- but Amazon.jp says it should be at my home by April 8 -- I'm so glad I don't live in Britain! (-:.
Now that people are reading the wonderful book, they are going to want to look at your back-lists, so I have a question. Which of Bob's books would be the most attractive to Crusie fans? And which of Jenny's books would be most attractive to Mayer fans?
(Waiting by the doorstep for that delivery truck to come roaring up (-:.)
When I told our local bookstore clerk yes, I'd like her to get me a copy from the just-arrived shipment in the basement, another clerk said, "You're the second one today." The cover magic made us all smile.
I'm not a cherry, but I'm doing my part to spread the word. I bought DLD -read it and finished it today and LOVED IT!- and my pal in NC bought her copy, my friend in Seattle picked up hers at noon, and my buddy in Canada is going to try to find it tonight.
I would like to say that you two did a wonderful job on this collaboration. Lucy and JT are the right mix of everything for each other.
And Bob - JT was seriously hot. Thank you.
Wendy
Wow! Managed to access the blog from my Blackberry. First cool thing this bloody device has done. That's it; I just wanted to share.
I just want to jump into the Britain bandwagon and whine about not getting my copy for at least another week. *sigh* So difficult to motivate yourself to do your work when you know others are reading a book you so desperately are trying to get your hands on.
I know it was posted here already, but I had to look for the ad in the Times today anyway. Very nice!
I didn't get the Crusie/Mayer email, either! I did, however, just get the Amazon email, saying my book shipped, but UPS, thus far, refuses to disclose when it will arrive. My guess is Thursday. Boo! Especially since I ordered from Amazon since my local B&N is not always good at getting the books I want when they first come out.
Maybe I'll go over there right now and see (or I could call - I hear there's this technology that lets people NOT drive everywhere to check). If it's there and I can't resist, I can give the Amazon copy to my Mom. Or my sister. Both of whom usually rely on borrowing my hardcovers even though we live in different states.
Buying hardcover books is a definite perq of the single life: no husband to complain about either the cost or the space it takes up, and no annoying person who wants to TALK to you when you just want to read the latest Romantic Adventure, Don't Look Down, by Crusie/Mayer, with the cool book jacket/camo cover. I missed one, but since it's April 4, I'm not going to worry about it.
In the darkness, there is....Bob.
Hiding.
Because he's wearing a skirt.
Mission Accepted!!
I am just so grateful that you are both) as addicited to this blog as us Cherrybombs are! (I am almost ashamed to admit that I had nightmares for you both last night!)
Also can't wait to see you in a couple days in Peabody. You better get that Moot stamp ready;-)
P.S. Just wanted to repeat this:
Which of Bob's books would be the most attractive to Crusie fans? And which of Jenny's books would be most attractive to Mayer fans?
Great question!
Ran to two different stores and finally found it. Am reading and spreading the word...fabulous!!!!
You know, if the Crusie/Mayer logo were a downloadable JPG file, we could add the words I'M A above it, and CHERRY BOMB below it and print it to an iron on applique available for most printers. We could then make our own shirts...
GOT it! Glamour Girl, you can drive out to Concord/Pleasant Hill to the B&N and they had about 10. I bought 2 so there are still some left for you! They weren't even snarky when I called to ask about it.
You know, I had a nightmare last night too, can't remember the details, maybe it was about Jenny and the tree and bush, etc.
Ooooh, I love it when a man knows how to talk tough. I am doing my part by talking the book up to my friends and book club. My book isn't in yet from Amazon and I couldn't wait any longer so I had to go to B&N and read their copy for an hour. I'm on page 27 and this thing is great!
Wanted to let y'all know the Books-A-Million in Greenville, SC has DLD! I bought the first copy they put out!!!!!! Also, I didn't get an e-mail either.
Well done Brandy! I will get to a book store this week Bob--I will even blog about DLD :D
Glad you are having fun :D
I went out & bought 3 books by 'Robert Doherty' last weekend: The Rock, Section 8, and Area 51. So far, I like "The Rock" the best, but it's the only one I've finished. It, er, rocked! (sorry) High body count, as advertised/expected, but great story line/action - a very good read. Reminded me of some of Michael Crichton's work, although I haven't read much of him either.
It really makes me want to see how this collaboration works out. Definitely a chocolate & peanut butter thang, or maybe chocolate and habanero peppers.
Way cool!
No email here either.
I am not so patiently awaiting your arrival in Chicago...
twiddling my thumbs and pacing, time just doesn't fly fast enough.
I was thinking that if halfway through the tour you start to feel faint (lack of chocolate, whatever you need), just send out an S.O.S. to the Cherry Bombs and voila! next booksigning you'll find several C.B.s offering chocolate (or German Shepherds to sniff, whatever).
So really, you guys have no worries for this book tour. We love you and think you're terrific -- and we have great taste! (okay, the rest of the C.B.s do)
It's walking on roses the rest of the tour (and no thorns, unless you count the TSA)
Alas no e-mail or book to be found despite trips to several stores. Perhaps there's a delay in the shipment to Canada... rampaging moose in the path of the dogsled maybe?
I will, however, continue to pester my local bookstore until there's copies for all.
I can't wait!!
Wynter
Okay, so I'll break with tradition and give the book a push at the romance chapter meeting in L.A. on Sunday. Wish I had time to read it first but can't get it until Saturday. As da Prez I've never promoted any authors work but this is special cause I'm a Cherry Bomb. (grin) And if the members don't like it, tough! They're kinda used to me anyway, so they won't mind.
I'll have a captive audience and great turn-out because we have an agent as guest speaker. Plus the meeting is in a big B&N and I just spoke with the CRM and she said they have a stack of books.
Hey, I plugged DLD on my blog the other day and managed to fit all four talking points in not once but four times! Just think. I may not get the hits some people get (ahem) but most of my visitors are nonCrusie/nonMayer reading folks...or at least they were. Hopefully, I've turned them onto something new, they'll turn someone else on, and voila! I've begat a whole generation of cherry bomblets.
Sadly, you guys are not coming to the lone star state even though we've got one of the most excellent mystery book stores ever, Murder by the Book, and Publisher's Weekly best bookstore, Book People. Now that my shameless plugging for Texas is complete I'll just say I'm still hyping the book to everyone who'll sit still long enough to listen. Thanks for the blogs; they're carrying me through finals.
Kay T: got my copy at the B&N in Jack London Sq. Believe it or not, the one in Emeryville said they didn't have their shipment yet and yesterday the Borders in Emeryville (near where I work for another 7 workdays) said it wasn't available yet and would NOT put me on a list to hold one for me as a result. The folks in Jack London just got a convert to use THEIR bookstore. I also got Anything but You, so when I'm in withdrawal after finishing DLD, I can start my rehabilitation.
Q: I notice that most of the people here are (1) female and (2) Cherries (in their pre-cherrybomb incarnations). So, since I'm in marketing by profession (to my frequent dismay) and my brain works on problems like this without my permission, what do we need to do to market DLD to Bob's fans?
My first suggestion is that if you decide to order both DLD and some of Bob's books, do so on something like Amazon in the hopes of linking them up in the "people who ordered X also ordered Y" notes for Bob's books, which would then lead people over to DLD. Other ideas from the rest of you?
I think Cherrybombs should get a challenge coin of their own. I'd say it should have a cherry bomb on it, but I'm not sure what one looks like. Perhaps the Crusie-Mayer logo?
I spread the word! I posted it in my blog, convinced someone to go to SC to see the Bob & Jenny Show (and buy the book), and am going to work on bringing everyone at work over to the Moot side tomorrow.
"Wow! Managed to access the blog from my Blackberry. First cool thing this bloody device has done. That's it; I just wanted to share".
Hi. Note that even though the Blackberry allowed me to make a comment, it also anonymised me. To add insult to injury, no Crusie-Mayer email either so decided that it might be the blog rather than the wretched Blackberry and maybe I am becoming a non-person?
Oh, and to answer glamour-geek's question, the blokes will read the book because they borrow their wives' copies, particularly if you take it on holiday. This seems to be the way it goes with my friends and their husbands. Quite how you translate this into independent sales, I don't know.
mq, cb: So I need to get married so I can find someone to share DLD with so we can tell his friends about it and boost sales?
Love you all, but that's one I am NOT taking for the team.
Bought it. Read it. Refused to loan it out, thereby causing others (at least 3) to go out and get their own.
If I fail my immunology test, it is because of y'all and your book, which was strangely more interesting than Fc and Fab fragments (imagine that.) I thank you, because it was worth it, and the passel of overworked immunologists who teach that class? They do not.
Put it on my library's blog "Papercuts"
Annie! How can you not love Immunology as much as DLD? Different parts of the brain. I dug that class. Ahem, but no romance, no adventure, at least not in the lecture portion.
I think maybe the mailing list took a hit at some point. Initially I didn't get the mailing either, but I signed up again, and it came through.
I also mentioned DLD on my blog, admittedly not well read, but the one person who commented sounds like she's going to get it. And she has a blog with lots of visitors, so that will get the word out.
