SHE WROTE: How It's Gonna Work
Sorry, didn't mean to be obscure about how the blog is going to work next year.
Every Sunday, one of us will post a short blog entry on a topic (see syllabus in previous blog entry). It will be that person's opinion on that topic. Occasionally, the other person who contributes to this blog will disagree, but she or he will have to shut up until Thursday. It will be a short entry, no more than a thousand words, on the basics of that topic. Anybody can read it. Nobody has to sign up. Nobody has to pay anything. Nobody even has to read it. It's just there.
The comment box will be there, too. If you have questions, you can ask them. If you disagree, you can do that. If you have comments ON THAT TOPIC, well, it's a comment box, gang. What you cannot do is chat. Because it's a classroom and the people who are reading the blog and then going to the comments are trying to learn more about that topic, not about your social life, fascinating though it is. 2006 was about how cute we all are (and you wouldn't believe what Bob just tried to name his character for the new book). 2007 is about the Crusie/Mayer Writing Workshop which may be the subtitle since that's the logo we're putting up. Oh, and there's going to be a T-shirt sometime around February, since Bob and I have both become entranced with the idea--you know, the T-shirt with "Nothing but good times ahead" on the front and "We're doomed" on the back--since that perfectly describes the writing experience which bounces between "I'm a genius" and "This is crap" on a hourly basis. We’ve got the same designer who did the logo working on it now, so it’ll be gorgeous.
Where was I?
Right. The comment box. Stick to the kind of comments you'd make in a relaxed but on-topic class. We're not deadly serious, you can enjoy yourself, but if you start to talk amongst yourselves, you're gonna get deleted because it's rude. You shouldn't be making people who are trying to learn something wade through your chat. That's self-centered. Yes, this is Mom, smacking you with a ruler. And don't think it's going to be the last time, either. That's why we told you to get a place of your own, remember?
Then when everybody’s had time to make a comment, the other half of the blog duo will come in on Thursday and give her or his opinion on the topic and answer questions. In theory, that’ll be it. Only two blog posts a week, the original post and the response. In actuality, I’m guessing there will be more. I often find it difficult to let Bob have the last word. Especially when he’s wrong. No, not wrong, misguided. No, not misguided, differentially crafted. No, wrong.
I'm kidding, there really isn’t a right or wrong in fiction: Whatever gets you to the story you want to tell, that’s the way to go. We’re just putting up what we think about the topics we listed. And then you can chime in. And then we’ll chime in some more. And eventually down the road, there’ll be a book on the craft of writing. And along the way in 2007, we'll all think about the craft of fiction, whether you’re a writer or a reader. Which is good.
Oh, and we’ll be talking about Agnes and Chase and You Again and Sanctuary because we’re not stupid, we’ve got books to sell and talking about them helps sell them, so if you want to know what we’re working on, this will be the place to find out.
Plus there’ll be the fights. I know some of you come for the fights. I think it’s disgusting, and we’re certainly not having them to keep you entertained, but the chances of us fighting in 2007? Very high. Especially if Bob doesn’t learn to clean out the coffee pot.
I think that pretty much answered everybody’s questions, right? You are under no obligation. Salesmen will not call. There are no hidden fees. We are not responsible for belongings left behind. No animals will be injured in the making of this blog. No guarantees expressed or implied.
If anything goes wrong, it’s Bob’s fault.

virgin blog!
The fights? Yeah, they are just the icing on the cake.
I'm looking forward to this blog workshop. I've read quite a number of books on writing, and I'm interested in learning your four acts vs. their three acts, and also Bob's spreadsheet technique. (I think it may be similar to something I just learned in the first book listed below.)
A couple of books I have found quite useful:
Write Great Fiction
Plot & Structure
by James Scott Bell
The Weekend Novelist/Weekend Mystery Novelist
I just started reading "The Weekend Novelist" and have already found it useful. I'm only a few pages in, and I learned of an MS Word tool that I didn't know about before. Click on "Tools" & then "Track Changes" and it will save all of your edits. OMG! I wish I had known about that one ages ago! [hangs head] I'll be trying that sucker out. I hope it ain't complicated. lol
Amazon.com gives sneak peaks of some of their books, so go check out their content pages.
I can't wait to see what I can learn from the two of you. And also from any comments that are made by others. The holidays can't pass by fast enough.
Jenny said 'If anything goes wrong, it’s Bob’s fault.'
LMAO!
Mini-Mia, I never knew that about MS Word! Cool.
Cheers :)
Bring it on.
ejffkbm - egad jenny, full full kalendar, blimey mate
Since I can never seem to take the time off to go to a writer's conference, I'm very much looking forward to this. And I'm glad we'll be able to ask questions. I was wondering about that.
Better keep that ruler handy, though. I think this might be a tough crowd to reign in.
And I come for the laughs not the fights. It just so happens the best laughs come with the fighting. We're sick, we know.
Definitely, Jenny, if anything goes wrong....it's Bob that is the source.
keep that keyboard handy!
As a reader I'm looking forward to your's and Bob's posts.
2007 is going to be a good year.

go to others, always Crusie united
you know, if you didn't share the fights, we would not read, and then comment.
can we help it if we are entertained?
G&T
I'm really looking forward to this.
And thanks Mini mia for the Weekend Novelist tip. As soon as NaNo is over I'm going to be going back and reading my craft books and new ones to help with revisions.
We can reign ourselves in and ask writing related questions, honestly. We behave at workshops, don't we? But really, inquiring CBs want to know, what did Bob just try to name his character?
Mini Mia--thanks for the tip! I didn't know that either. My computer is kind of like my brain--I only know how to use about 10% of it...
For me th eissue is never the time, it's the money. I checked into the conference that was in SF last February (?) and about passed out when I saw how much it cost.(!!!) The price was only for the conference and didn't include food and lodging, which is pretty pricey in the City by the Bay. Unfortunately I can't afford that type of luxury, what with having kids and a mortgage and living paycheck to paycheck. (sigh)
So this blog will be the closest I ever get to an actual workshop. I am going to think about it like a telecourse from college. And what's great is that I can read it whenever I have the time--no stress! Awesome! I can hardly wait.
But I am thinking that I also agree with everyone else when I say can you possibly move POV up in the schedule? I have a book that I am reading about writing from the Gotham Writer's Workshop out of NYC and that particular chapter left me more confused than when I started it! Just a thought.
As for Bob's character--I am still waiting for a girl named 'Cherry' somewhere in one of their tomes....!! *wink*
pqhyzl (blue)--aahh, that's just not fair--I'm not going to play anymore 'cause blogger is ALWAYS picking on me! *whine, snivel*
And can I just say, with all sincerity: "I love you guys!" *sniff*
jhsxxv (red)--see?! I TOLD you--Blogger HATES me! TWO x's? TWO!!
Well, it's a good thing there'll be somewhere else to chat, since that's all I'm capable of. I will be interested to read the new blog, but I'm quite sure I won't have any intelligent comments or questions.
But for now, I can still say chatty things, like "I finished Poison Study!". I enjoyed it very much, though there were some things that I think were supposed to be surprising that were obvious to me, and I did NOT approve of the final solution on the subject of the "Criollo" (whose name was, I think, a mistake, as some of us know what it is; for those who don't, you will enjoy the book perhaps more if you don't try to find out, so people shouldn't spoil it for them! Or maybe it won't matter to you, but for me it was sort of a "when are they going to figure that out?" thing. But perhaps it was obvious without the name anyway.). The characters were interesting and the situations provocative, and we'll see whether I can wait to get Magic Study from the library (they have it, but I don't have my card at the moment to reserve it).
omopcilv: the magic word that got away from Mickey in "The Sorceror's Apprentice" scene
Hey Sheri - POV, once you get it, you get it. Early on when I started writing I didn't get it. A friend of mine sat me down with a couple of different books and explained why one was limited 3rd, one was omnscient (spelling, I know!), what was considered head hopping and why and more. I couldn't believe how easy it was once I figured it out. Gotta love those magic light bulb moments!
Back to football.
Re track changes: Go to "View" on your toolbar, choose "toolbars" and then choose "reviewing." That puts the track changes icon right on your screen, so you can turn it off and on more easily.
TT...
Yeah, I finished "Poison Study" too. Liked it. Can't wait for "Magic Study".
Believe there is a third called "Fire Study" in the works.
Thought criollo was a made up word...now I'll have to look it up!

some world in "Poison Study"
You are such a good mom, setting up guidelines for appropriate behavior ahead of time and making sure the fall guy is in place covering anything that may potentially go wrong. We don't come here for the fights, it's just a nice side bennie.
I'm a bit worried about the ruler ...
Jenny and Bob,
I am SO psyched that you two are doing this!!!
Can't wait until January. :-)
Chelle
Blame it on Bob? Yeah, we can do that.
And it will be just like a workshop at a conference, right? Well, I promise to turn off my cell phone alarm, so I won't be mortified when it rings in the middle of your presentation.
Other than that, I'm going to take lots of notes. Like many others here, I can't wait to hit 50k for NaNo, and even more, to be done with the story. Because honestly, it gets harder and harder for me to just keep writing, when there are things that I REALLY want to go back and edit/change/fix. I literally have to walk away from the laptop sometimes. It's getting harder and harder.
i want that shirt. and yes, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU both for doing this. Sanctuary- that's the hotel one, right?
ok, ok, i like the fights. so i'm sick. i've learnt to accept that in myself.
"Jan 21: The One Sentence Idea (Bob)"
i'm curious about this one. is this like the pitch you make to the company? (that's what we do in film. but then why would this be in the "writing section". hmmm. is this the "if you can't explain your idea in one sentence something is off" idea? is that an actual idea or did i just make it up?)
mini-mia and ol biddy: thanks for the tip.
sheri said "My computer is kind of like my brain--I only know how to use about 10% of it..."
LMAO. and ditto.
I'm really looking forward to this workshop. I'm in a creative writing workshop class right now where the teacher traumatizes the students. This looks like it will be more fun, and quite possibly, more useful as neither one of you are douchebags like he is. And I quite frequently already learn interesting things about publishing and writing from this blog so it should be good. I mean, I learn them inbetween laughing over the fights that is.
And it's FREE!!!!
Yippee!

Yeah, I learn as I go, so I ain't all that computer smart either. I've read the Gotham Writers' Workshop book too. I enjoyed it, and learned a bit, but not enough to keep me from searching for more books on writing. I sometimes wonder if I'll ever come across the one book that will completely satisfy my quest on "How To Write." I've got shelves full as it is. lol I've even bought books on screenwriting, as some books and websites claim they also help with writing books. They claim that storyboarding/comic book scripting are very helpful. And I've bought Uta Hagen's Books & her DVD because one book claimed her insight was also very helpful to writers. The 'object exercises' in particular. List Of Actor Questions. (If you're interested in reading the whole thread. I'm Joxcenia there, btw.)

Okay Blogger has posted my comment twice. Sorry about that. My computer is moving kind of slow, and I guess I should have waited before posting again. ::rolles eyes::
Since I wasn't logged in to my blogger account when I posted, I'm unable to delete one of them.
Very sorry.
Alicia wrote: "I'm in a creative writing workshop class right now where the teacher traumatizes the students."
Alicia that is horrible. No student should be tramatized by their teachers. Bob and Jenny would never do that. Although we might have tramatized them a time or two, not intentionally of course.
About books on writing. I have a ton too. I think in the begininng I spent a small fortune on them. Many of them didn't help. A few did. I have a couple that I keep on my desk and I refer to regularly and that I think are really good. They are of course, THE NOVEL WRITER'S TOOL KIT by Bob Mayer, STEIN ON WRITING by Sol Stein, SELF EDITING FOR FICTION WRITERS by Brown and King, GOAL MOTIVATION CONFLICT by Deb Dixon and beleive it or not WRITING A ROMANCE NOVEL FOR DUMMIES by Leslie Wainger.
I'm sure there are other good books out there, these are just the ones I tend to gravitate too. Also, reading books in general is very helpful. I try to read at least one book a week and not just fiction. Last week I read WHITE HOT by Sandra Brown and WHILE SHE SLEPT by Marion Collins which is a True Crime novel and very good and kind of freaky since it happened near where I live. Both were good.
i do have some books on writing (not enough, esp since Bob's is missing from my collection) but i seem to get more by reading different styles and seeing what works/didn't work for certain books. since i also do screenplays, i have some books on that. i have to say, i learn more about writing in a year here than i did on a few years of reading books about it. J&B are extremely good, and CBs have also been very helpful.
morning JJ (something is just so weird about the fact she wakes up when i go to bed- even with the time difference). morning to the rest of you too.
Goodnight OH! you sure are a night owl. And I'm soooo not a morning person. But I don't have a choice. Back to my Diet Coke.
Jenny,
You need a single serving coffee maker--the ones that use pre-packaged coffee pods. I have a Keurig brand and it has changed my life.
Make Bob buy it for you.
Is this what you mean by "on topic"?
The new blog sounds fantastic.
You two are incredibly generous with your time and your knowledge. Thank you so much!
OFF TOPIC
I had a DLD moment this weekend. I was at the hardware store and up at the register they had a display of light sticks, just like JT used in the circle. If people around me noticed my stupid grin they were polite enough to ignore it.
andi,
Are you ready for the big game? Two weeks and counting.
"(and you wouldn't believe what Bob just tried to name his character for the new book)"
Speen?
Come on, Spill - you can't leave us hanging!
I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm with Sheri that I think Bob named a character Cherry. Either that or Ficelle. ;-)
... or Silent Bob.
Maybe Jenny and Bob could hold a charity auction (on JCF?) to name one of the characters in an upcoming book.
It is possible to get a character in one of the future Discworld books named after yourself. Usually people appear in the books by bidding for the privilege in charity auctions.
Wikipedia on Pratchett
nkvzjr - one of those innumerable secret police organizations that crop up in lesser known republics of the former Soviet Union
Well, if Jenny can name a character (albeit not a human one) MacGuffin, I don't see why Bob shouldn't have a bimbo named Ficelle. It's a really good name for a young thing in a tight pink T-shirt. With silver sparkly bits to draw attention (or even more attention) to the bosom.
Oooh. I think a ficelle character named Ficelle would be perfect! And we can all feel superior because we 'get' the joke.
A bimbo named Ficelle? Good lord. What has the world come to?
Jenny made the reckless claim: No animals will be injured in the making of this blog.
So I guess you'll be more careful about sending any of them home with Bob?
Just saying.
bw
BCB - Moot wasn't injured, remember? She went back to the swamp. It was time. Or so Bob says.
Jenny also made a comment about how Nobody even has to read it. Snort. If they write it, we will read it. Kind of like that baseball movie with Kevin Costner - Field of Dreams....If you build it they will come.
Speaking of movies - girls night out this weekend - The new Bond Movie. Oh my! Casino Royale! Haven't had a really great bond since the Sean days. Roger Moore was okay, but it was down hil from there. I'll be Casiono's bond girl any time.
I don't know Jen, I think we need to demand proof of swamp life...
And YOU as a Bond girl? *SNORT*
Is this the first in the alien series they're releasing?
Casino Io Royale?
bw
Hey, 20 years ago I could have been a bond girl!
sheri and me and rg about the names: LMAO.
i'm with mcb. a ficelle character named Ficelle.
forget about the Bond movie, apparently Happy Feet is out. it looks so cute. (go watch the trailer. it just makes you smile)
Jen wrote: Hey, 20 years ago I could have been a bond girl!
Jen, you twit! I wasn't talking about physical attributes (you and I both could have been Bond girls, back in the day -- yeah, you've seen the pics).
What I meant was I just can't imagine you lazing around half-naked and breathless, waiting for James to save the day -- you'd be out kicking butt and taking names, rounding up the bad guys before James could finish zipping his pants back up.
I meant it as a compliment. Twit.
bw
BCB - trust me. Lazing around half-naked all breathless with Casino Royale...yeah, I think I could handle that!
I am not a twit! I prefer Ding-bat.
Jen: after you see Casino Royale, please no spoilers here! I'm going with friends in a couple weeks as my birthday celebration and don't want to know until after I've seen it!
glamour geek have you heard any more from kay t? How is she doing? You are a good friend to her. Give her our hugs please.
I like the idea of a ficelle named Ficelle. That mcb person is one smart cookie.
Hi dee I will soon have reached the 50,000 then I will be doing the happy dance, but my story will not be finished. So I guess I just keep writing cause I still want to know what happens. I have to see if his grand gesture works to win the girl. It has been a tough month though, hasn't it? I am sort of plodding too since I still don't feel great but I can't walk away from the story. I am like you. I want desperately to edit as I go. I have been sending my work in each night so that the NaNo computer can verify my word count. My computer is off by three.

Way to go SDCB
JenT and BCB as Bond girls. I like it. I think that story could rival the one about the road trip.
Personally, my favorite bond was Pierce Brosnan. I'd had a think for him from the old Remington Steel days. Most of you probably never heard of that show
RSS ... oh yeah I remember that show. Loved it. Shame they messed around with it so much at the end. But Brosnan just kept getting better. LOVED him as Bond.
Jenny, Bob: renovate Vegas only.
Rss- I too have fond memories of that show.
As a wee lass, I used to scuttle home from school and watch the syndicated Remington Steel with my ma before going outside to play away the rest of the day. It was a wonderful mother/daughter bonding thing.
Then my dad would tell me about how Pierce Brosnan was the only man (other than him) my mother ever loved...
iuhpekkw: I...uh...pekk W.
LOL Lori. I'm not sure I've ever let DH in on the crush I had on Brosnan. Of course, when we went to see the first Bond picture he was in I think I murmured "Oh man, I love this guy." That might have given it away.
McB Glad I'm not the only one who remembers the show--before syndication.
Maybe I'll see if it's out on DVD and ask for that for Christmas. Along with the fifth season of Quantum Leap.
Too funny, RSS.
Even if my ma had never vocalized it, her insistence in watching every Remington Steele episode with a hushed reverence along with her developing an avid interest in Bond movies just as Brosnan took over the lead may have clued him in. :)
(And they are out on DVD .)
Quantum Leap was a family show for us. Back in the days when everyone gathered around the one and only TV (13" screen!) that existed in the house. *sigh* The good old days.
eodmb: I just don't think that was very nice, Blogger. I happen to think eo is brilliant.
Lori I just turned on the tv to watch while I ate lunch. A movie is on with the only man my mom ever loved besides Dad. Cary Grant. We used to watch the old movies with her on tv. I still love old movies.
Operation Petticoat. I'm supposed to be writing but it's a romantic comedy. It's research.
Quantum Leap ... loved that show too. You know if tv writers today spent more time watching the old shows they could be learning something.
Yes they could.
I was watching a show about Star Trek a few weeks ago. The point was made that after Gene Roddenbury (?sp)died, the show became darker without the hope for the future and belief in the good in people that he'd always woven into the show.
And the show lost viewers. And the very dark spin offs never gained a lot of viewers.
That's one of the things I love about Quantum Leap. Hope and belief.
The good guys win. People grow in a positive direction. The world can be a better place.
If we don't believe in it how can we ever achieve it.
How did I get up on a soap box?
Climbing down now.

I think I saw that a while back, or something similar. And I think its true. Most of your sci fi shows tend to be shot in low light, and the script is grim. And one right after the other they keep biting the dust. You would think the writers would have figured it out by now, wouldn't you?
But they mess up lots of great shows. The first season will have some unique premise and it hooks the audience. But then, I don't know, maybe the writers get bored? And the next thing you know they're showing all this family trauma, and the characters dealing with deep angst. And then the show doesn't come back next season. Because the writers had no clue what kept the audience coming back in season 1.
Or they fire the writers that made the show a success and hire new ones.
It does drive you nuts though to see a show you enjoy ruined.
By the time, I get around to watching new shows they're already canceled.
never got into any of the Bonds. didn't know what QL was, but my mom liked the concept a lot.
rss: yep. drives me nuts to see a show i love ruined. plus, a lot of the time they just keep the show going because it brings in some viewers, when they should cancel it and let the show go out on a semi-high note.
