SHE WROTE: This Is a Test

We're starting to get next year's workshop blog lined up. It won't be here on Blogger, so if you have trouble finding it next year, you can always go to jennycrusie.com and click on the link there to get to it. It'll have an rss feed and also an rss for the comments which is nice. I think. And you wouldn't believe how great the interface is. It's searchable so you can find old topics with no problem and there's a table of contents . . . Mollie has done an amazing job again.

Anyway, this test is for the forums. As you know, we'll post the first craft post on Sunday and then follow-up on Thursday, and then on Saturday we'll stop the comments and move everything on that topic over to the CherryForums where the discussion can go on forever if you want. I'm just not sure how to move you there. So I put the revised syllabus up over there
and invited people to criticize it. This means you. Now I want to see how much trouble people are going to have getting there from here. I don't want to shove a bunch of lemmings off a cliff the first week in January. So I thought I'd shove just a few lemmings off a cliff the first week in December. Once again, you.

So to see if this works, I'd appreciate it if some of you would go to Cherry Forums. I posted the syllabus in Writing Craft which is under the Writing Topic but you can't see it because you have to register to get in there. Registering is easy, just click on "Register (newbies!)" (that's Mollie talking) and choose a username, give your e-mail (no salemen will call and you will not be put on a mailing list although mine is really cool) and put in a password. Once you're approved (takes about ten minutes), the Writing Craft topic miraculously appears above "Writing Life" and you click on it and then go to the HWSW Writing Topics and see if you like where I moved POV. No, it's not next week. (We ask people to register for the craft topic because people discuss their work there and it's the one place we figure should be protected.) When we put up the HWSW Discussion Board, it'll be right there under Writing Life, so you won't have any trouble finding it.

In other news, Bob and I may be MIA for awhile. We're on the last week of Agnes and it's really crunch time. It's good stuff and we're happy with it, but we're not doing much except typing and sending terse e-mails. For example, we just discovered we have characters named Franklin and Frankie. It takes a year to see this. And Wilkes and Wilson. How do we miss these things? Then there are the big fixes. But we're doing good. We'll just be gone for a couple of days.

Now go over that cliff. Thank you.

Jenny,

Yes the link works. Like a dutiful little lemming I walked right off the cliff. Query: Would it be better to send folks directly over to "Writing Craft"? Because as is the link takes you to the main page. Or maybe that's the way you want it.

Must go dash myself on the rocks now.

Wow Jenny, Thanks for the step by step directions. I have to admit my computer angst arrived as I travelled over to Cherry Forums. I was just sure I'd be the first and only CB to be unable to get to the syllabus. Everytime I thought, 'I don't see it, I don't see it' I just reread your directions and went back and Wala...there it was. Well, I'm still waiting to see if I can get there, but I believe I registered. (am waiting my 10 mins.) This is fun. I'll be back. Oh for goodness sakes, I can't post under my name over here again! Maybe I'll have better luck in the new blogspot next year! -Lady T

you know, in one of my first attempts at writing, i realized that every one of my characters had names that started with an "s". that was awful. i had a shelley, a shelia, a steve, a sidney... pathetic, really.

I want to thank Jenny Crusie and Bob Mayer for this blog-site: it has been really good fun while it lasted.

I shall not be following any/all of you into any of the new manifestations of the community: I do not write fiction, and I am far too old, and too busy, to learn, so, although I am interested in analysing fiction, I shall pass on the teaching course. The Cherry Forums' rules and regulations have always scared the living daylights out of me, have never got round to registering there. And the new set-up for just chatting is another blogger-type site, so I shall pass on that, too.

But hey, this will give me more time for my own writing! One huge scholarly catalogue to finish, one new popular book to start (my publishers are pressing me to sign a new contract less than a month after my current pop book came out - which means it is selling!). More than enough to keep an old lady busy.

It has been great getting to know you all. Good luck to all of you with your writing, have a lovely Christmas, a wonderful year in 2007, and farewell!

;-) :-)

Dee: i did that with M names once. But even worse, when I changed the M names, I ended up with a name the same as a popular series' character (although apparently not popular enough for me to have read it), Alex Cross (from a series by Patterson). I had to go back and change it again to avoid confusion and/or lawsuits.

AgTigress - does that mean no "word of the fortnight" or whatever schedule you and Talpianna were going to maintain? Rats. We'll miss the wisdom and erudition both.

Congrats on the cookies, Bryan. Lady T - it's delightful to see you learn and grow! I think that makes you a protagonist, or at least an arc. I can do it too - I was going to whine about something, then decided that it wasn't of general interest. I will always be a "chat"-er, but maybe I can learn to be briefer.

I have to go home and do something with leeks and pastry. It seemed like a good idea when I was planning it...

I think it's mostly stopped snowing for now, but I enjoyed the first few minutes that I was out in it this afternoon. Then I started thinking "I need a scarf to cover my ears. And my nose. And I hate it when a snowflake hits me in the eyeball". I'm not a weather wimp, really. Mostly. Just inadequately clad. You know it's winter when multiple layers from chin to ankles and wrists counts as "inadequately clad"!

Yes, I'll miss your comments too, Agtigress. I was thinking of you today (well all Brit's) when I went to the specialty store (the Brit section) to buy my new jar of Vegemite. (It's made in Australia but heck, what do these Americans know anyway?) They were out of it!!! Dang. I nearly panicked, I so had a craving for Vegie on toast.

Anyway, jumped into the car and drove down to Palm Desert and found that branch of the store had some. So I bought two jars (just in case) a jar of beetroot (cause they pickle it differently over here) two Violet Crumble bars, one package of Mc Vities plain chocolate Digestives, (cookies) and a jar of Duerr's Grapefruit Marmalade. Yum!

I'm all set now, all I need is my registration for the Cherry Forums.

I guess this is karmic payback for having angered everyone I know this past weekend. Jenny has turned me into a lemming AND a Cherry all in the same day. Jumping off the cliff was pretty much mandatory after that.

You know, I swore when I started reading this blog that I would never go over and become a Cherry. They are all so nice and polite and well-behaved and there are so many of them and that place is confusing and... geez, Jenny, are you sure you know what you're doing here?

It's a damn good thing I couldn't figure out how to post a comment over there. Not that I was going to. I'll bet they signed me up for one of those lurker memberships, where you're not allowed to comment. Good idea. Maybe Jenny does know what she's doing. Maybe this will work after all.

And now I read that Tigress is going away. I'm going to cry. Bad enough Tal won't talk to us anymore. Who is going to chastise me for vulgar, woefully misinformed, unenlightened colonial thinking? Oh yeah, I'm a Cherry now. Sigh. It won't be the same. Tigress, will you please send me an email once in a while? Click on my name and there will be a link.

I'm going back to my cave. This has been a very stressful day.

A Cherry. And they welcomed me. ME! Probably a form letter. Must not have recognized me.

Now I guess I need one of those new t-shirts. Just skip the front part. I'm doomed.

I think my world actually stopped spinning earlier. Agtigress is leaving and BCB became a Cherry? WTF??!!??
Seriously, the Cherry Forums are not that bad. (This, coming from a woman that got totally slapped down on her first post!) No, that was MY fault. Are you seeing that, Mollie? I am totally taking the blame for that. I was chatting, and they don't take to kindly to chatting. You are supposed to stay ON TOPIC over there, which is very different from JCF. On JCF, you jsut talk, and all is well. Well, on TCF, you are supposed to follow along with the converstations. I didn't know that, and I just chatted. But I have to admit, the Mod that e-mailed me was so sweet, so full of Cherry love, that I couldn't do anything like get mad. Oh no, I just felt MISERABLE for violating the rules. And I was too scared to go back, for months. No, I'm not kidding. I felt like there had to be a big "I'm a chatting loser" tattoo across my forehead, not that anyone over there made me feel that way. They didn't. So don't you guys think that they did, because, like I said, they were all very nice and polite. And i know a fe of the Mods. Kim, Cherry Red, is a totally wonderful person, and I adore her. As are many of the other Mods. It was just a bit intimidating for me. But now, I go over there quite often. Mind you, I don't post. I just read. I soak up all of the wisdom silently. But I know that if I did post, I would stay on topic, and they would be full of Cherry love for me. I'm quite sure of it actually.
Honestly, I like TCF, and I love JCF, but THIS PLACE is like home to me. This is the place where I come when life gets in the way of living, and I know you know what I mean. This is the place where I can be me, just dee, and know that you guys will accept that. I will really miss this place next year. I know we'll have a new home and all, but I kinda like our basement. It sucks when we have to grow up and get kicked out by Mom & Dad.
Ok, gotta run off to bed now.
Go register at TCF. And don't do any chatting. Post your "hello, i'm here" message, then stay ON TOPIC. And you'll do fine. Yes, even you, BCB. You especially. They'll love you. How could they not? *WE* all do!!

Not necessarily my last post ever, no - just a statement of intention, because the website mutations that are in train leave me pretty well out of it, as I explained. I don't even need to try to register for the Cherry Forums to be scared stiff by the rules. They are far too daunting even to attempt (is there an initiation rite involving blood and fire, too, I wonder?), and there isn't much point in joining a forum if one is going to be too terrified to utter.

OH - titles of books: I cannot post details here simply because I prefer to keep my real-life identity separate from my chatting-about-novels and chatting-about-the-English-language identity (AgTigress) on various forums and blog-sites. Anyone who belongs to any of the Delphi forums can e-mail me through my profile there at any time. Both Tal and I hang out at the Lunatic Cafe on Delphi from time to time, and at Dictionary.com. practically non-stop.

Tal has been a bit overwhelmed by this and that, including a dying central-heating furnace, over the last few weeks. Don't know why one needs central heating in Arizona, but apparently one does.

Ahem. I did NOT mean to imply that there is anything WRONG with being a Cherry, just that I'm not sure it's a good idea for ME to be one. And the reason I swore I'd never go over there and sign up is I figured I was being a big enough pest over here and I'm sure there are limits to even Jenny's patience.

Thanks, Dee. You couldn't have told that story earlier, huh? Because of course I went back over there and figured out how to make a comment and I'm sure once they all wake up and read it I'll be chastised for being chatty. Or something. Sigh. And I even read the rules first. Sigh. So I guess now I'll become a lurker too.

Geez. A lemming, a Cherry and a lurker, all in the same week. And I've done two things in two days that I swore I'd never do. Must be the full moon.

Forget about the cave, I might have to go back to bed for the rest of the week.

And Tigress, we're working hard to make the new CB Bar & Grill as much like this place as possible, so I hope you'll still stop by once in a while. Just give us a chance to take the locks off the doors and brush the dust off everything first.

BCB - don't worry, I'll chastise you. And you must get out of the corner. Hell, If I can manage getting out of the darkness, you can get out of the corner. Geez.

SDCB - You know, I told Jenny over at CherryForums that I thought she was really funny, whitty, i suppose. I too thought it would be nice to have a lesson in writing humor, but this morning I realized when I was writing this scene and I tried to be funny, it wasn't really funny. I wasn't so funny. I think it goes back to that natural voice thing. Not that we can't write funny, or dark, or step out of our comfort zone and try something new, but we all have a voice and when we hone our craft, that voice shines through, you know? So, me? not so funny. At least when I'm trying to be.

as far as JCF and CherryForums. don't let the rules stop you from joining, it's a great place to be. Granted, I lurk more than participate, but as Jenny said, the rules are in place for a reason, and honestly, that is a good thing. And it's not as overwhelming as it first appears to be. If you hang, watch, listen, read, you'll get the hang of it. Kind of like here, but different.

There is an enormous amout of information over at Cherryforums. I can't tell you how much I've learned by jumping over there and reading.

I know many of you fight the whole Yahoo groups thing, but it really nice in many ways. Hard when you are on like a million of them, but nice since there are threads and you can just comment on what thread interests you the most. JCF chat about many of the same things we chat about and really, they are a friendly sort. Very supportive.

Just my two cents.

Maybe the CF are not for me and I should rethink this plan, but I did so want to take J&B's classes on writing. I don't give a rats a** about the chatting, I've got enough friends for that, and I can always go to the CB Cafe for more. *grin*

Damn, I'm just going to go eat my Vegemite on toast and have another coffee. And yes Agtigress, you either love the stuff or you hate it. Obviously, I love it.

At least this is how I understand it.

In any case, I will be right there helping everyone move over to the CB Bar & Grill. I am finding that I need it for my own comfort zone. I fit in here. Not sure what that says about all of you, but WTH.

Hyper-sensitive you ask? Heh.

I'm sure some of the wait time for getting 'approved' might have had to do with us overloading the system? Maybe? While I have no idea how and who does the approving I know what it's like to be a moderator (subscription moderator for PAN Loops), people get busy, they have lives, can't always approve right away, things happen. I've been tied up all afternoon but just needed to say that I was a Cherry before I added da bomb. They're a lot like us only there's more of them. so no fears on any front. C'mon, they recognized The Cherry's true worth right from the beginning. You know that makes them good people.

Oh, sheesh! That was tongue in cheek. If I forget to put my little *grins* after everything no one gets me. *sigh*

I know a few Cherries too, and they're great. In fact I'm having lunch with an "original Cherry" next week. She just got a contract and a possible two-book deal, and we are going to celebrate.

I am an obedient, dedicated reader and did all that was asked, just awaiting my approval. But am a little frightened by all I've read, so I'll paint, move furniture, whatever to get to the new Bar and Grill, I think I may already need a drink.

Bryan - thanks for the nice sentiment about Army. And thanks for clarifying the cookies, after some previous comments my mind gets mushy, oh alright it gets dirty, geez, I can not be the only one. You mustn't be snowed under?

To all, it is beginning to feel a little like Christmas at the new/old house - got the tree, so it definitely smells of holidays. And miracle of the season, my boys are getting along! Is that a choir of angels singing the Hallelujah chorus?

Margaret, Kyra - check in, I worry such is the life of a nonmedicated over anxious personality - how many kids are in the pool? OK, how many now?

must go try to get the newsletter.

Hi All. Been snowed under for a week and suffering from CB withdrawl. Finballly surfacing but no way can I check back through all those posts!!

Just been to Cherry Forums which I joined quite a few months ago and used to go to quite a bit but haven't for ages and I'd hoped that my computer would remember my password etc because I cant remember it and it doesn't!! I really must remember to write things down :-(

Robena- violet crumble, now you're giving me cravings.
Agtigress - love vegemite, the thicker the better. Hate Marmite.

Question - will the CB Bar have a link to the cherry forums?

Oh lighten up, Jen, your heads are about to explode. You’ve been going over to the Forums for quite a while now and you’ve made friends and already feel comfortable there. The rest of us? Not so much.

No one is questioning the good nature of the Cherries -- after all, we know Jenny loves them and that’s endorsement enough. And quite a few CBs are also Cherries. And we know Jenny has in the past offered a general invitation to come over and join them. But we figure she didn’t really mean all of us, and probably not even most of us.

Because we also know we’re the red-headed stepchildren, the pirates who boarded the HMS HWSW and sort of took over, and are about to get kicked out. And that’s ok because we’re making our own place.

Only now The Cherry has ordered us front and center, telling us to fall in line for a command performance in the dining room. We’re used to eating off the card tables in the basement and most of us have never even dared to look in the dining room. But now we have to go sit in there with the real kids, where they use bone china and fancy utensils and fine manners.

So Bryan will button the top button of his shirt and Louis will remember to remove his cowboy hat and us girls will tie back our hair with our nicest ribbon and try to remember not to chew with our mouth open. But we just know we’ll say something gauche and inappropriate. Or we’ll be asked to pass the gravy and it will end up in someone’s lap. And none of us wants to be the first one to cause the Cherries to give us a pitying look and say, “They really can’t help it, you know, they aren’t used to polite company.”

So we’re a bit uncomfortable and feeling defensive about it. But we’ll get over it. Because we don’t want to embarrass ourselves or The Cherry.

Really, if I can do this, so can the rest of you.

Besides, we know we can always head back to the CB Bar & Grill to finish our discussion over a cold one, and no one will care if we drink Coke straight from the can and eat pizza right out of the box.

Maybe a couple of Cherries will even join us. And we will welcome them.

I've been to Cherry Forums and lurked, wandered over to check out the construction on our new digs. Good to see Lori's pole made it over there safe sound and shiny. I need to get some circulation back into my limbs. Sorry Mary, I can't divulge names, but feel free to take a twirl.

At 5/12/06 10:17 PM, Cherry Magic Sheryl said...

I meant a twirl on the pole, not at guessing the secret identity of my "imaginary friend". I saw the funniest bit on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night about air quotes. You can say anything you want, even the truth, but if you use air quotes, it makes the statement less real. I'm going to start watching the Canadian equivalent The Mercer Report to see if it's as "funny" and "accurate". Don't mind me, I'm in a goofy mood. Scope Dope and I went to see Happy Feet and now I can't close the back window of my car. (the two events are related but this is a long enough comment as it is)Did I mention it's freezing here? In Canada. Imagine that.

Granted, I think I've posted all of maybe 5 times, but it's very educational and I find that I've learned a lot. Just saying.

We have new digs? That we can see? Hmmmm...where have I been? Anyone want to enlighten me as to where the new digs are. I guess I've been in the darkness so long I missed something. Thanks.

You'll all be thrilled to know that we have the poll ready for you to vote for our logo. Everyone be really nice to Lori. I kept changing my mind and she had to keep changing the poll. Bless her heart, in only the nicest way.

Before you vote, PLEASE NOTE: You are not voting for the specific logo you see in the poll.

There were six distinct types of logos, with several variations for each of them. The poll only shows an example of each type.

There are a couple of reasons for this. First, Bravenet doesn't allow more than 10 images per poll. Second, if we put up all 39 choices, it would dilute the vote too much, and we might never arrive at any meaningful consensus.

Okay. Polls are open!!! We'll keep it running through the weekend. We know we usually get close to 50 votes, so, unless we are woefully shy of that, we'll be announcing the winning type on Monday.

Then the fun begins. /;+)

warning - shameless friend promotion and shameless self promotion.

So, yesterday I had lunch with Samantha Hunter. She writes for Blaze and she's a wonderful writer and a dear friend (yes, biased opinion). Anyway, she's been very supportive of me and my writing and has held my hand for the last three years during ups and downs of my new career and my life in general. Anyway, she has a new book coming out next month UNTOUCHED and I blogged about her, her book and her new blog. Check it out at on my blog - just click on my name - you know the drill.

now for my shameless stuff - a friend of my did a youtube commercial and included my book in it. I still get totally lost in the youtube world and I really don't need another place to distract me from my writing, but I though I'd share what she has done. I guess the commerical still isn't completed but hey, it's a commercial, with my book cover - how cool is that.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sJLb4fXmypY yeah, I know, I need to learn to do the little blue hight light thing.

Wow, ZaZa! You all have been hard at work, haven't you? I hadn't looked at the logos for quite a while and I'd forgotten how many there were. I think it's going to take me a few days to make up my mind. Thanks to Lori and Bryan, too. Good job.

Jen, I don't have time to look at the commercial right now (work calls) but I'll look at it tonight. Very cool.

OH: You are so sweet. Really, you are. On those days when I want to throw up my hands in disgust and walk away from the writing, remembering comments like yours is sometimes the only thing that makes me turn around and get back into it, trying one more time to make it all come out right. Thank you.

And I heard a vicious rumour (I think I was asleep at the time, but does that make it less likely to be true?) that the Cherries are sometimes rude and ornery and that they've been known to stab each other under the table with their forks when no one is looking and that at least once a week The Cherry has to yell at them for banging their heels against the chair legs. They're probably more like us than we thought. Go sign up.

I'm just happy this morning that the entire loaf of french bread (including half the plastic bag) my dog ate last night while I was driving to Chapel Hill and back did not end up on the carpet during the night. Yes, that constitutes a good start to the day in my world.

It's all downhill from here.

I voted, thanks and bless your hearts(not the southern way) for such great work.

Sorry it is so cold in Canada, I think that is what makes Canadians so dang funny - the freezing tempuratures preserve youthful thought processes. Keep lotion on your cheeks so they don't get that chappy redness. And treat your self to a manicure so your cuticles don't crack and bleed!

1. Anonymous comments are now permitted.

2. Comments are only moderated if they contain 2 or more links (like the blue underline you see above).

I do receive notification of all comments, so if something really offensive is posted, or if some spam slips through, I'll see it as soon as I check my e-mail and can delete it then.

Next on my list is word verification.

I, too, was a Cherry, for several years. Not one of the originals, signed up about a year after they started, I think. Cherry Vamp, that's me - sweet but with a tendency to bite. True then, still is.

Marmite rocks! Vegemite? Not so much. ;+))) Carr's Wheatmeal Bisquits are faves of mine, too - like graham cracker cookies. Great with brie or flavored cream cheeses.

I'm going to be playing with our new digs, so if it suddenly looks hideous or everything is out of alignment, that's why. I don't speak php, so some of this stuff is by trial and error. /;+)
